The protagonist is a widow and single mother whose life seems to have been in a downward spiral ever since her husband died. Things get even worse when her son is finally kicked out of school due to behavioral problems and a creepy book appears in their home, causing his behavior to worsen as he becomes more and more convinced that the two of them are being tormented by an entity known as The Babadook.
