[Falcon Densetsu/F-Zero GP Legends]

[personal profile] ex_mek82 2015-05-14 12:50 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, OP, I am so passionate about the F-Zero series (I've held out 10+ years waiting for Nintendo to announce a new game, waugh) and I have such deep fond feelings and so much love for it. One of my first big fandoms, too (I drew so much shitty fan art, wrote bad fan fic, and made fan characters that have since had the serial numbers filed off).

... but I really did not like GP Legend/Falcon Densetsu. Sorry. :(

Well okay, I only really liked Lucy Liberty -I even stole her car name as my internet handle most places, haha. And man, I had sketchbooks filled with Lucy-related drawings back in the day, and came up with an elaborate head canon to fit her into the X-GX continuity, too- and hope she becomes a canon expat in any future F-Zero titles Nintendo chooses to make, but that's about the extent of any positive feelings I have towards that part of the series.

That said, maybe you could try looking on Tumblr? I know there's a very small but devoted F-Zero fandom there, and a fair number reblogged a Lucy drawing I did a month or so ago, so there's interest in GPL/FD, at least. Worth a shot, IMHO!

Thank you for the post! Haha, it's nice being able to see that I'm not the only F-Zero fan out there even when it feels like it sometimes. Eh, it's OK to not like some things. Lucy was pretty ace though. :)

Do you know what tags the F Zero fans use on Tumblr? I'll go check it out, and maybe who knows, I'll upload my silly doodles on there.

Yeah, looking back on it, my main issue was changing things pretty drastically from the games (not that the games were very coherent to begin with) and arbitrarily making characters good or evil. That said, next to Lucy, Zoda was another part of the show I genuinely liked (and I'm ashamed I forgot all about him in my initial reply), both in the original Japanese version and the dub. He was the rare exception where I found the show to be an improvement over the game lore, haha.

(I do find it funny and yet sad that even Nintendo has disowned/forgotten about GPL/FD... they don't even reference it at all in the last couple Smash Bros. games, unless you count a couple inspired palettes in SSB4)

I think they use 'fzero'. At least, that's what I've used before with one or two of my drawings.

Oh hey, I never thought to check the tag without the space and there's a bunch of different posters in there too. On one hand it's nice to see stuff I missed, but on the other...

I'm just gonna silently seethe about Tumblr's crappy tag system. It used to actually work with hyphens back in the day too, but of course, a random update broke it one day without any warning.

(Anonymous) 2015-05-14 04:31 pm (UTC)(link)
Thanks for the help with the tags! I swear, Tumblr is like some sort of magic where I have to know the right words to type into it, and then suddenly, hey, here's the F-Zero fandom that you've been looking for a long time!

It's a shame that Nintendo hasn't done much with the series, especially when it was so fabulous...: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5RWO5eJwXmc

Who knows, maybe in the future they'll pick it up again. ;) I'm also a Metroid fan, so I'm used to waiting, lol.

I was at the peak of my F-Zero stage back when the anime started, but I was mostly a fan of the games. I actually enjoyed the anime at the start, but around the 20 episode mark I gave up and just read summaries and skimmed the rest later when I wanted to double check some things. I'm sorry OP. 8'D But I'm always glad to see fans of any part of F-Zero having fun with whatever they can, since the whole thing's been dormant for ages. I second checking out Tumblr. The fandom there is small, but they seem to enjoy whatever comes across their way, whether its game or anime related. I've even liked and reblogged some F-Zero anime stuff despite not being super into it, haha. Just know that tagging it can be weird since Tumblr doesn't like dashes in tags anymore. The search function will bring up anything though.

Yeah, I got to admit, season 2 is where it starts to lag. It was at that point that they had to pull out the stereotypical anime destiny plot and try to make Dr. Stewart look cool, and that was super transparent. One cool thing was that the after-credits segments with puppet Bart the bartender got more and more ridiculous and meta. Holy shit, those segments were hilarious....

Yeah, Tumblr's search function really sucks sometimes. :P

Yeah, haha. One day I do want to give it a second shot and watch it the whole way through, no idea when I'll get around to that though.

Anyways, I know you asked the question about the tag above, but I'll answer down here... If you do end up posting, you should tag your stuff as "f zero", with a space instead of the hyphen as you can see, and it will show up under tumblr.com/tagged/f-zero (of course, it's always mostly Smash Bros and Mario Kart stuff in there, sob). Some peeps would also throw in a separate "falcon densetsu" tag for the anime, but that one isn't used much lately. It usually just all goes into the main "f zero" tag. Still might be worth adding on though, just for people looking up anime specific stuff.

And then there's the search function for looking at untagged or incorrectly tagged things, but that can be a nightmare to browse through cuz you'll be seeing a lot more unrelated things.

Image: "Forever Alone": crying meme, and the cover art for Falcon Densetsu/F-Zero GP Legends

Text: You don't know how much I think this show deserves a fandom, or heck just be more well known. It's a pretty good non-game adaptation of a videogame, it's funny, it's creative, and most importantly it has heart. I want to write and draw fanfic and fanart, but I know the only person who's going to be viewing it is going to be me…

Probably too late to get a reply but, I've been a fan of F-Zero since the original SNES game came out (I'm old) and this anime always intrigued me, is there anyway for a westerner like myself to watch this?

(Anonymous) 2015-05-14 02:50 pm (UTC)(link)
The dub only made it to 14 episodes, and never got a complete DVD release here, but the whole thing got fansubbed. The quality is not great (it's hard subbed, and has a few grammar and spelling errors) but it's watchable. You can either look for a batch torrent (bakabt has one) or watch uploads of it on YouTube (a user called MistNinjaJulian has a playlist for the whole series).

Not throwing in any direct links cuz I dunno how F!S is about that... I haven't done anything here in ages, haha.

*Er, my bad. The dub made it to 15 episodes, not 14. Tiniest error. But just so you know how much is out there if you decide to look for that version too.

Here's a link to the playlist of the show that have been subtitled: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL1yLSrPLiSV9p1t-YKGuvWHSfu0v8KQJT

Dreadopp is the name of the youtube channel and one of the people who translated the complete show. Haha, I still remember back when they were releasing the episodes consistently once a week on Sunday(?), the youtube comments were like a get-together for old F-Zero fans for fans to talk. It was a fun time... :)

Hope you enjoy the show!
