People taking an offensive word and jokingly using it in a fun context hardly says anything. But it is not a word that's evolved past its baggage. Pretty much any serious time it's used, it is going to be negative, and probably about a woman.

I mean, I affectionately call my friends cunts. Doesn't make cunt any less of an offensive word, or a gendered insult.

I hate to tell you, but fandom calling their favorite husbandos "sluts" is not doing much to erase the very real slur and sexual double standard against women.

I'm not saying you shouldn't use it for fun, by all means. But the word isn't magically not offensive because you do. And for a man to call a female character that already endures a load of sexism a slut so offhandedly, it's not exactly surprising that some people are going to be frustrated.

It isn't only a fandom thing, and it isn't only about it being used for fun. Have you never heard of Slut Walks? Part of the point of them is that being a slut is not a bad thing, and shouldn't be treated as such.

You're trying to narrow this down and ignore examples in real life that contradict what you believe. It's disingenuous.

Feminist groups using "slut" isn't really about normalizing the word. It's about negating negative judgments of women's sexuality.

And sorry, but in the end, it is different for a man to say it about a woman, because it is traditionally an anti-woman slur that judges female sexuality to a standard that male sexuality has not been held to. I feel like you're purposely being obtuse here.

This. It's the same difference as a white person calling a black person a nigger, versus black people calling themselves the same term, or gay people using queer versus straight people calling them queers.

Using the term to describe yourself is a very different thing to having another group use that term as a description of you.

The connotations behind nigger and the way people respond to it actually has been changing. It's just a bad enough slur that it's going really, really slowly.

And why is it important? Because it ISN'T going to die. Words like that don't. The only way to make them go away is to change what they mean.

It is really NOT changing. It's been adopted by black communities, sure. But the context of a white person calling a black person such is no different than it was 50 years ago. If anything, I should think, it's more serious.

So he was using in a funny, joking context. How is that any different? Nothing implied it was an insult. He didn't say she was disgusting for sleeping with so many men.

I could forgive the first time, no problem. Funny joking context understood.

When he got defensive and tried to justify why she was a slut, much less jokey (tone taking into account his "sorry not sorry you guys don't laugh at my hilarious jokes"), that's when it crossed the line for me.

And the heart of the issue to me is Black Widow is frequently neglected or reduced to her sexuality by marketing, even toy lines and the like. Getting defensive about your right to use the word slut in this case is especially annoying.
