Past Shows

(Anonymous) 2015-05-13 11:14 pm (UTC)(link)
What shows have you started after they were finished? Bonus if they are more recent shows.

Did you spoil yourself before/during watching?
Did you watch all in one sitting or over time?
After watching it, did you regret not watching it when it was on? Either to support it or to be part of fandom at the time it was going strong?

Lost (some small spoilers)

(Anonymous) 2015-05-13 11:24 pm (UTC)(link)
I watched Lost after it was done and I'm glad. I thoroughly spoiled myself after a few episodes (I wanted to know what those damn numbers were and was happier to find out early on that they're never explained).

Also, they had a few episodes that would've been torture to have to wait weeks between. All I wanted was to find out about the situation underground where Jack was being held at gunpoint (I think at the beginning of season 2) and they drew it out for several episodes. I would've HATED that if I'd been watching it live. And, of course, I knew the ultimate ending so my expectations weren't dashed.

The fandom didn't produce anything (that I know of) that interests me. So, I'm glad I waited and I don't regret it.

But the numbers are explained.

I watched this one after it ended too and I feel the same way about being glad I didn't have to wait between episodes. I'm basically like that with everything, but even more so with this show.

What are they then? Because I saw them repeated but never explained. And none of the sites I went on explained them either.

There was a list of candidates for taking over protecting the island. They were numbered. The numbers that were repeated everywhere corresponded to several of the characters who hadn't been crossed off the list yet near the end.

Huh. Didn't catch that. I remember them finding the list but didn't connect the numbers. The sites I went to didn't say anything either. *shrug*

I do think it's a really stupid explanation. Certainly if I had watched over five years, I would've been very unsatisfied to find out that's all they meant.

Personally I like the vague explanations that do more to guide you to making connections yourself rather than spelling it all out, but I understand why so many people are frustrated by it. Some people are just never going to be satisfied when half the answers to their questions are "It's a magic island. The end." and that's fair.

The Wire. I did spoil myself because I was really hoping some characters would die so wanted to see if they did (some did, some didn't). I don't really regret not watching it when it was on because it was slow in some places. And it was way more enjoyable binge watching it.

Breaking Bad. I watched all of the first 4 1/2 seasons in like two weeks. That show I DO miss not watching live because I missed all the hype and being able to discuss it with my siblings.

Same on Breaking Bad. I marathoned it all just a few months ago, and had no idea what would happen because I managed not to retain anything I'd ever heard about it except that it was about science or something.

It was great, but I also wish I could've freaked out with everyone else about finales and whatnot. I'd rant to my friends who had seen it years ago, and by then, the excitement sorta dies.

I was lucky enough to get into Breaking Bad right around the time it went from this thing that was rumored to be pretty good to something that was all over my tumblr dashboard.

I did watch The Wire years after it aired too though. But I didn't spoil myself. I don't usually care when I do see spoilers but I don't go looking for them either.

Aw. When I finished binge-watching Breaking Bad, only the series finale hadn't aired. So I missed most of it but at least got to experience the finale hype.

I always watch finished shows, because I hate waiting for new episodes to come out and I'd rather watch at my own pace.

I hate spoilers, so never. So it sucks when you're watching a long series and really want to look up trivia on IMDB or something, but can't because of the terror that you'll run across an unmarked spoiler.

Due South

(Anonymous) 2015-05-13 11:35 pm (UTC)(link)
Not really recent though, sorry

I think I only read a few spoilers before and during the time I watched it, which is weird because I usually love looking up spoilers for things

I watched the series in like two or three weeks which is insanely fast for me. It usually takes me foooorever to watch a tv show. I usually manage like half an episode a day because I get distracted super easily

I do regret not being around when the fandom was in its heyday, but the show ended when I was like 7 years old so I probably wouldn't have been into the show back then, much less the fandom

Breaking Bad, Legend Of Korra... probably a bunch of other stuff too.

I am really good at avoiding spoilers, and I marathoned the hell out of both of them, so I really wasn't spoiled for either.

I didn't regret watching either of them while they were on. I didn't like BB (appreciated it, but didn't like it) and I didn't care too deeply about LoK at all.

Battlestar Galactica (2004 series)

[personal profile] kaleidoscope 2015-05-13 11:43 pm (UTC)(link)
I actually watched it for the first time when the last episode aired (sounds weird I know). Quite confused but went along with it, whatever. Maybe some I don't know how many years later, BBCAmerica picked up the series. Cool I say, I'll start from the beginning! Didn't take long into the first season when I looked up the spoilers to what was going on or help explain the references. Lost interest somewhere in the beginning of season 2, still haven't seen the whole series. Have no interest to watch anymore of it.

Being in the WWE fandom is a novelty for me because pretty much every fandom I get into to is usually 20 years old. I think Merlin BBC was the most current off the air show I got into. I started watching it almost a year after it had ended. I tried not to get spoiled, but I couldn't help but look stuff up on tumblr and start reading fic, so I got a bit spoiled for some things. I didn't regret not watching it when it was on because it was kind of one of those shows I had to binge or I would've stopped watching probably at some point.
yuuago: (Anno 1790 - Magdalena)

I start everything after it's finished, just because I'm slow as hell at getting around to watching anything. Right now I'm watching Rome, which has been out for ages.

Usually I don't get spoiled, though it does happen sometimes. Usually I take it piece by piece - one a day, or half an episode per day.

I got into Anno 1790 a long time after it was finished, and I really wish I had heard about it earlier. It would have been nice to be into it while other people still had interest.

Uh... a bunch of shows? Most of the shows I've watched really. I mean, pretty much any series from the 90s or before that I like, and that's most of my favorite shows - Deep Space 9, Twin Peaks, and X-Files come to mind most immediately. I started watching Fringe when it was on but then I stopped after like 2 or 3 episodes and didn't pick it up till a lot later after it was done. Bunch of others. The Wire.

I almost never watch things through in one sitting. I switch back and forth between a bunch of things - I'll watch 4 or 5 episodes of one thing, hit a bit that I'm not feeling, go watch something else. I have spoiled myself for some things but not for others - a lot of the time if it's something that I don't care about as much I will spoil myself for it. And I guess I've never really regretted watching something while it was on because that never seemed like an option and I'm just used to watching old things. It would have been cool to watch X-Files when it was just starting, I guess. I would have felt cool. But I also probably would have fallen for the metaplot, so who really knows.
