A lot of jokes are offensive on some level, but not everyone is going to censor themselves all the time. Even if you consider what he said wrong, people make mistakes. I've slipped up and said things I didn't understand the full weight behind, even though I never meant to offend anyone. Should a person be demonized because of something like that?

There are plenty of legitimate shitty people in the world who intentionally try to hurt people, and one tasteless joke is what pushes people over the edge?

It's not just the joke. That most people can forgive. It's that he's doubled down on it and is still defending himself.
