I never said you did, just saying they're not charities.

Although to be perfectly honest, a lot of them are businesses. They just sell salvation and Jesus and all that instead of anything useful.

Well yeah. But those ones - they sort of sneak by because, while they're terrible, it's really hard to differentiate between them and the churches that aren't businesses.

Anyway. Yeah. Churches aren't charities, but there's pretty clearly a consensus in society that they ought to be tax-exempt, and that just doesn't bother me. Because they're not really trying to generate return on investment or anything like that. They're serving a different, other purpose, whether or not you agree with that purpose.

There's not a consensus though. It just so happens right now they're the controlling majority who don't want to pay taxes. It's a hypocritical double standard.

It's not a double standard at all. It's not like Muslim churches have to pay taxes and Protestant ones don't. If you're a church, you're tax-exempt. OP's original post was just factually wrong. Churches aren't a specific subset of businesses, they're a separate thing altogether, so it's not a double standard. Let alone a hypocritical one.

And I would argue that there is a consensus - that's the controlling majority you're referring to. The majority isn't churches, the majority is the people - churched and unchurched - who think churches ought to be tax-exempt.
