Two linked groups of conservative science fiction fans and writers, one of moderate conservatives (Sad Puppies) and one of extremists, neoreactionaries, fascists, and fundamentalists (Rabid Puppies) organized voting slates to get specific works and writers on the ballot for the Hugo Awards. Controversy Ensued.

This sounds like fun. You gotta link to any of this madness?

(Anonymous) 2015-05-14 11:45 pm (UTC)(link)
It's all over the place. I think... solarbird? who posts here has a bunch of links, since they've been collating stuff. But the only thing that comes to mind is that GRRM has written about it on his blog in a moderately anti-Puppy way, while also linking to some of the Puppy people making their cases.

I would also say, as kind of a note of caution knowing your politics, that you might not want to sign on to the Puppy thing too quickly, because the Rabid Puppies really are completely fucking insane neo-fascists. Like, literally, straight-up "women don't belong in science fiction fandom or outside of the home and black people are savages" type of lunacy.

That sounds less political and more like people are cray-cray. Either way, I'm a lady who writes science-fiction and fantasy and people telling me what to do is always hysterical.

File 770 has been keeping a daily log of both sides of the argument. Man deserves a freaking medal. Go read the archives for yourself: http://file770.com/

I look forward to reading this tonight!

And for those who might not know the Hugo award is an annual award of the year's best as voted on by fans (as opposed to awards like the Nebula, which is voted on by the Science Fiction Writers of America). The huga is like the People's Choice Awards, while the Nebula is like the Oscar/Emmy/Tony/Grammy.

(Anonymous) 2015-05-15 07:37 am (UTC)(link)
So... I mean, no doubt that those people are assholes but if it's people's choice, what stopped other groups from doing the same thing for authors and works they thought better suited?

(Anonymous) 2015-05-15 08:38 pm (UTC)(link)
nyart, but from my understanding because bloc voting has with one exception never been done before and is considered in bad faith.

Just reading that makes me mad.

How did the puppy theme come about?

(Anonymous) 2015-05-15 08:47 pm (UTC)(link)
I started to write an addenum, but anon here put it better:

http://fandomsecrets.dreamwidth.org/1213778.html?thread=837091154#cmt837091154

Also IIRC some of the voted-by-puppies candidates turned down their nominations because they weren't happy about this.
