The Sad Puppy "methods" are soliciting input from people re works those people believe are (a) good and (b) generally wouldn't receive recognition from the Hugos. They they draw up a ballot and vote. They may vote as a bloc, but I don't think that's necessarily always the case. I have no idea how that is disproportionate or unacceptable. How is that less acceptable than, say, GRRM campaigning for his faves?

And they did not invite the Rabid Puppies. Those are two entirely different groups. The Sad Puppies have publicly, repeatedly, distanced themselves from the Rabid Puppies.

They've distanced themselves now that it's a controversy, but they still started the whole thing and spent quite a bit of time talking about how much of a gentleman Beale is and all that kind of thing.

And they did organize or try to organize bloc voting. That's different from campaigning. And it's precisely the thing that people object to.

Yep. The Hugos only work because people voted and nominated in good faith. As soon as puppies began acting in bad faith (yes, they claim it is not against the rules, but you know who are the most despised group in any society? Rules lawyers, even actual lawyers hate those guys) it screwed the process. The fact that, L Ron Hubbard aside, no one has really tried this before is a testament to most SF fans desire not to be *that guy*, you know, that asshole. But the puppies, sad and rabid alike, seem to think that "asshole" is a positive character trait.

Just for your edification:

With respect, nothing in those links really disproves anything I said. I'm sure they don't want to be associated with the Rabids now. But if they didn't want to be associated with Beale they shouldn't have spent so much time defending him or called him a gentleman.

Gentleman my ass.

Well, I've provided my links, I'd be happy to read yours. Where did you see them spending a bunch of time referring to Beale as a gentleman?

(Anonymous) 2015-05-15 01:57 am (UTC)(link)
They spent a lot of time defending them, and they (or at least Torgensen) called him a gentleman.

Do you think Theodore Beale is a gentleman?

Whoa, there. I asked for your source. I've provided links, I'm happy to read yours. I'm genuinely curious to see what you're talking about, unless you're just blowing smoke. Stop with the ad hominem bullshit.
