I write my "best" smut in my cube at work where anyone, in theory, could walk up and see what I'm writing in my yellow notepad...

I hope you're not spending all your time at work doing that. I'd also be VERY wary of how your company runs their IT staff and whether they check what their employees are doing.

I'd be very pissed if I found out my manager wasted a ton of time RPing and reading fic. Especially considering how many incompetent people somehow manage to get promoted to positions of power in many businesses.

In OP's defense, they did mention it's downtime. I assume lunch breaks and whatnot.

(Anonymous) 2015-05-15 11:20 pm (UTC)(link)
OP may also be smart and be using their phone. An office prevents people from looking at that screen too.

... which is why you get INTO the IT staff and make sure to carefully set the auditing to not notice you. :P

This was sort of my reaction at first, but then I decided to give OP the benefit of the doubt and assume "down time" meant "time when there is literally nothing else to do and I'd be bored if I didn't have a way of entertaining myself". We all have times like that at our jobs. (I wish I could entertain myself better during those times, even if they really only happen on weekends for me.)

That reminds me to grab some pages out of one of my crossword books before work tomorrow. Thanks, anon and OP :)

My friend had a colleague who was caught downloading hardcore bdsm porn...

It's not so uncommon as you think.

(Anonymous) 2015-05-16 02:29 am (UTC)(link)
Ask any IT staffer you know. They will tell you that about 25% of all downloads at work are porn and pirate ware. That's in any kind of business. Yup. Even the ones with harsh policies against it. People doing it won't even stop when found out, from the same reasoning that made them think it was a good idea to begin with: "The office has so much better bandwidth than I have at home".

This made me lol, but I'd be careful about doing that over company internet. Maybe it would smartest to download some files on a datastick or into a dropbox account, and read it that way.

... well NOW it is. :P (Okay, not you, but. I can sort of see my manager roleplaying on her lunch...)

(Anonymous) 2015-05-16 12:30 am (UTC)(link)
That's, like, my dream job. :P To be able to kind of just goof off and get paid for it. :P

Text: Recently I got promoted to a managerial positin where I work.

I was ecstatic…

because that meant I got my own office, which meant I could roleplay and read fic without anyone looking over my shoulder.

I wonder if anyone suspects that's wha their 30-something supervisor is doing on their downtime.

Hahaha just make sure you have a ton of windows just in case!

I used to be able to do that at work in my downtime, but now I have actual responsibilities. :/

I once had a job with a lot of downtime, and my own office space, and I certainly spent most of that downtime dinking around online. Just remember it's not your personal computer, keep your private info safe, be cautious about NSFW stuff, etc.

I was fired once for doing this. The IT department firewall had a keystroke logger that caught everything. It didn't matter if it was on my lunchbreak or during downtime or not. It was still inappropriate use of work bandwidth/computers.

The worst part was that they then went through all of my logs looking to see if I had sent any sensitive information to anyone. That included roleplaying logs and talks with my girlfriend (I'm a cisgendered woman and was NOT out then). My ex-coworkers were very uncool about it all. I really wish I'd never taken the risk, so... be really careful.

I used to work at an ISP that fired a girl for writing Harry/Draco smut on her computer during her breaks.
