Whedon was going to show him near the end in the plane looking at the stars. But execs told him no because people would think they were setting up for Planet Hulk. And they are very against doing that.

I can see why they wouldn't want to do Planet Hulk, but a very different storyline with Hulk in space could have been awesome.
