(Anonymous) 2015-05-16 08:30 pm (UTC)(link)Briar: Unfortunate Implications about growing up with strong female role models
Sandry: Story complications because it looks very much like Sandry will rule Emelan at some point, and TP tends to stick to the reality of royal families; Sandry will have to have children who will be her heirs, and I don't see Tammy putting a character she loves with someone completely wrong for her. (Also I'm not so sure about this, but I have read some people speculating that Sandry would be a Lipstick Lesbian Cliche.)
Daja: Butch Lesbian stereotypes everywhere. She works with a hammer and anvil, for shit's sake. As it is I like that the stereotype is subverted by the plain fact that Daja is a multilayered character.
Tris: On the surface she'd probably be the best choice, unless "fat angry lesbian" is also a cliche (probably it is, I dunno). But there is the fact that of the four she's the least traditionally good-looking, and that seems like a "so ugly no boys will ever even look at her" situation, which is disheartening to young readers who don't realize that eventually looks stop mattering.
Honestly I think Tris would have been the best choice of the four for gay character, but I really think she isn't because of every character TP's ever written, Tris is the most clearly based on the author, and Tammy's straight.

(Anonymous) 2015-05-16 08:44 pm (UTC)(link)As long as the character has an actual personality and depth, and isn't a nasty parody, I don't care if they fit a few stereotypes.

(Anonymous) 2015-05-17 01:06 pm (UTC)(link)I always read Tris as asexual, even before I knew that was a thing. She's amazing and powerful and ace.
