Yeah, I still go back to Harry/Draco mostly out of nostalgia too. As I've gotten older, I've found Draco to be more and more of a whiny prick when years ago I, like many, many people in fandom, saw him as more of misunderstood woobie (there's a reason that he's the namesake of the trope "draco in leather pants" haha) which made a lot of the fanfic enjoyable for me at the time, but now I'm just not as into it. I still can't help but be fond of the pairing though.

my very first noncanon pairing though? man, I can't even remember. I'm reasonably sure that it was Kurama/Hiei from Yu Yu Hakusho though. Almost positive. Either that or Quatre/Trowa from Gundam Wing.

Quatre/Trowa is non-canon?

I just watched Gundam Wing for the first time yesterday and they seemed pretty canon. Granted, I'm only 6 episodes in.

Like in a lot of anime, there's a lot of things that can be interpreted as subtext between them but they're never actually made outright canon or anything like that. Plenty of fodder for the shippers though, fortunately

Quatre is really sweet... For a mass murdering boy soldier.

I still don't understand any of Gundam Wing. It makes no sense. They have these incredibly expensive mecha suits and then send kids out in them. In order to what, kill the bad people responsible for war? How can any sane adult believe that would work? That's like believing if you kill the president of a country you've killed the whole country and they won't just elect another.

Relena is cool though. If misguided and with a weakness for "misunderstood" boys, but then she's supposed to be a teen, so that's the most believable part so far.

lol yeah, most of the time it's best not to think about shows like this too logically. The very idea of having mecha suit battles with other people in general is insane in and of itself...but it's also cool, so you just gotta roll with it.

I like Relena a lot too; I also thought she was pretty cool and when I first saw the show as a little kid, I wanted to be like her in a lot of ways. Fandom though...hoo boy, most of them did not like her. She was pretty much constantly demonized; if it wasn't happening in yaoi fic, then it was happening in fic where people hooked their mary sue up with Heero. Poor Relena

When I started watching I didn't know it was a show about giant battle suits. Then right in the first episode not only are there mecha, one of them even transforms mid-flight. I let out a real life whoop of delight, it was so fun and cheesy.

The animation isn't really my style, but I have to say it's well done.

The whole aristocracy politics thing is my favorite plot thread so far. Even if the plot doesn't bear scrutiny, I appreciate that they've tried to give it complexity.
