Do the main garbage once a week, and your own garbage daily, and whatever mess YOU make, personally, clean it up. If they're really, truly, disgusting pigs (Pre-med students, man. Don't know how they managed to pass Infection Control, the state of that place.), they, or at least any visitors unfortunate enough to enter the Pit, will see your "clean spots" and know something's not quite right with the picture.

I mean, literally, if you use one burner on the stove, clean that burner ONLY. If you're cutting vegetables on one section of counter, clean THAT section only. Move whatever clutter you need to, in order to do whatever it is you're trying to do...then put the clutter back exactly as you found it.

Bit passive-aggressive, I'll admit. But that was literally the only thing that kept me sane, the year I was in the boarding house from hell. (Pre-med students, man. Never. Again.)
