What's sad in this case is that it really wasn't pedo. The character was clearly older int hat picture!

Admittedly, the latest picture the author drew, with no specification of that where the character looks exactly the same AND is mutilating herself with knives without any trigger warnings... that's something else. Though I suspect less pedophilia and more trolling.

I'm all for "own your gross fetish" (and, y'know, tag and warn, so your target audience can find it and people who don't want to see it can ignore it) when it comes to extreme underage...or non-con...or slavefic...or guro...or anything else that is legitimately awful IRL.

But when you're talking about the idea of shipping teenagers with other teenagers? Especially for series where the bulk of the characters are teenagers, a lot of the audience is teenaged, and many of the adults in the fandom probably got into it when they were also teenagers?

That's not gross. That's fandom. And trying to equate it to the sexual abuse and molestation of real children is horrifying on all kinds of levels. People should be ashamed of themselves.

Seriously. About 70% of mainstream anime/manga characters would not be shippable, because no matter how old and buff they look, the fact that they're still in high or even middle school means they are clearly not adults.

I think it gets pretty ridiculous in this case (if this is about Ava's Demon) because the people who are complaining about the "underage nudity" and "pedophila" seem to have very little problem with shipping, for example, Free! characters at the same time.

Example: My childhood OTP was TK/Kari from Digimon. At that time, we were around the same age, but now? I'm over a decade older than them and I still ship them. Am I a pedophile now?

DA I never draw porn and everything I draw with characters underage is always PG rated. I don't think about sex with a lot of ships, I just think they're cute.

If people are seriously thinking shipping is all related to sex and it's all gross then we have entered a new age of weird in fandom.

The conversation the other day about the GW fandom is a case in point. Massive fandom as its height, with all sorts of smut and kink going on, and the main characters were 15/16. I don't remember any discussion of their ages at all. Not even when they were shipped with the 20+ year old characters.

The GW fandom was crazy for other reasons, but I dread to imagine what it would've been like if it was played out today against the backdrop of Tumblr.

See, this is exactly the kind of thing I'm talking about, whipping out "OMGPEDO" over everything. It's gonna get to the point where fanfic writers can't even write about things like Harry Potter anymore because OMGPEDO even if it's just, IDK, Ron and Hermione kissing at 16.

Pedophilia is a psychiatric disorder involving primary or exclusive sexual attraction to prepubescent children, not a "fetish". It's estimated in 3% of the population, 90% of whom are men, meaning that ~.3% of women are actual pedophiles. It's not liking chibis, or teen romance, or de-aged version of adult characters, or wanting to draw art of these, particularly since the characters involved are entirely fictional.

If you really think someone in fandom is a pedophile and a threat to real children, you should report them to the police. Otherwise, recognize that words have specific meanings and knock it off.
