Any examples?

One that comes to mind is Northshore and Southshore, where a missionary tries to end a conflict without resorting to genocide. She fails, a character speechifies about how she was always doomed to fail and she should never have been trusted, and genocide ensues.

That sounds like a terrible book and a hateable author.

For reference, the author's most famous and well-loved book is about an ecofeminist society that's trying to get rid of violence and homosexuality through selective breeding and forced sterilization.

Is this like a really self-righteous male author?

Wait, is this Sheri Tepper? That's pretty brutal even for her, isn't it?

Yeah, it's Tepper. I've never actually read anything else by her, but after Northshore and Southshore, I don't really want to. I know it's hypocritical for me to complain about writers who make their stories really dark, but I felt like she was just wallowing in all manner of violence and torment.

Yeah, I quit on one of her books because it seemed to be substantially about squicking out the reader.

It's somehow reassuring to me that a) that was immediately recognizable as Tepper and b)the awful is spread out so evenly in her books (and interviews), as opposed to the kind of author who all of a sudden springs eugenics or something on you out of the blue.
