It's an odd turn of events, because for decades fandom was a place to make friends, squee, and share fantasies via fic, RP, etc. It had its share of wank, cliques and drama, but these were generally avoidable. Apparently people have decided that it's more fun to hunt down and destroy others, and it's difficult to avoid on Tumblr because it pops up in tags or turns into massive wanksplosions that consume the fandom for days at a time.

I used to be super active on LJ comms, A03, etc., but other than this community and anon memes, I've retired from fandom. So much of it just seems gut-churning and exhausting now.

It gives people who have no talent of their own the ability to feel accomplished.

I've left fandom for the same reason; when hitting up your own blog makes you feel tense and anxious in case there's some hateful drama going on, then you know you need to step away. It was emotionally and physically draining, and that was never what fandom was supposed to be.

My last fandom's actual canon was the sweetest, most innocuous and harmless thing imaginable. It still managed to bring out the vicious hateful assholes who decided that if you weren't having fun the way they deemed correct, you weren't allowed to have fun at all.

Blech, I'm sorry about your fandom. I got out before things turned really ugly.

I can't even enjoy most wanks now because they're so spittle-flecked and vicious. Oh for the days of delusional Snapewives and pasted on heds....

Lemme guess, Free! fandom?
