I read somewhere that 'kissing with foreheads' is intimate because we are the most defensive about our face.. it's the whole letting someone look at you from such close distance too. Men still have a primal instinct to get in the personal space and face to face of other men to challenge them so if they seek that closeness with someone in a peaceful way, instead, it means trust and letting oneself be vulnerable just to share tenderness and affection with another.

It's interesting that different animals beside humans do that to express affection too (if your cat headbutts you with their head they think you are their precious cute human baby) might be more universal than a kiss.
