(Anonymous) 2015-05-17 03:18 am (UTC)(link)Also, "The whole "representation" thing is just a way of making shipping seem more important than it actually is."
What? So, people who want more lead female characters, PoC leading roles, or more cultural diversity is also not that important? Sorry, but just because people ship stuff doesn't make it any less important to give other sexualities than just hetero some representation.
As far as shipping goes it's only slash/fem slash shippers that get labelled as delusional because these ships don't even have a chance to become canon. Even crack het ships are viewed as more likely simply because they are het.
This shipping frustration is just the side-effect of the bigger problem of limited representation. This also goes for virtually zero asexual/aromatic representation too.

(Anonymous) 2015-05-17 08:23 am (UTC)(link)I think you might be reading a little too much hostility into AYRT's comment. I could be wrong, but it sounds to me like they're talking about cases where people latch onto a ship and then start asking for representation in the form of that specific ship. And if that is what they're saying, I kind of agree with them.
Remember back when J. K. Rowling announced that Dumbledore is gay? There was a very vocal subset of Remus/Sirius shippers who flipped their shit because to the, the wrong character had been confirmed gay. Now, Dumbledore being the only canonically non-straight character isn't really great representation, but that was not their argument. They were mad that it hadn't been their ship instead.
It's true that in many source materials there is one particular relationship that seems like a very good candidate for becoming canon if the creator(s) wanted to add diversity, but if it should happen that a different same-sex relationship is confirmed instead, chances are the fans throwing a fit about it were just using the representation angle to make their shipping preferences seem more legitimate. And I say this as someone who both wants more diversity in their entertainment AND has same-sex ships they wish were canon.
