Can't copyright ideas, OP. As long as you're not using actual work written directly by your friend during your RPs and claiming it as your own, then there's nothing wrong with using the ideas you'd dreamed up together. Mentioning her in the A/N would be a courteous thing to do, but otherwise I wouldn't worry too much about it.

ayrt

You just hit another of my concerns on the head. We had started playing it out, and definitely some of the dialogue that came up I would want to keep in almost verbatim, because it fit perfectly. I could do the high school book report plagiarism thing and just change a few words around to synonyms so that it's not exact, but that feels a little bit dishonest.

The author's note idea seems to be the consensus, though, so that's probably what I'll end up doing.

I'm guessing you still have some kind of log/record of the RP (IMs, emails, journal comments)? If you're using lines of dialogue that you yourself wrote for your side of the RP/your character then again, I don't see any problem with that, especially if you can back it up should any shit hit the fan.

If you mean lines that your friend wrote independent of you for their character/s, or that was a collaboration effort between the two of you in which it's impossible to say who did what, that's when you're straying into sketchy territory. In all honesty, however perfect the lines I'd shelve the disappointment and rewrite any of those parts wholesale rather than risk it.
