At one point I had someone explain it in a fixed sentence that went "a player is offside when at the moment the ball is played, he is the only one closer to the other team's goal, than the ball.
Though in this case the keeper is considered "inside" the goal, so it doesn't account for Manuel Neuer.

Right, that's basically it.

The thing is that there's a lot of little technicalities and such. But basically - don't be past the last man when the ball is passed to you.
