Torque. Damn it physics. I know how to calculate it but I don't understand what it is.

Actually that kind of sums up a lot of physics for me.

My vague "I got an F" remembering of physics tells me that torque is basically rotational force, as opposed to straight push-or-pull force.

Yeah, that's about as much as I understand of it too. I don't understand how it actually affects anything or why we would ever need to know how to calculate it in a real-world context.

Maybe that's just asking too much.

Well I can think of a few practical applications. Anything to do with a twisting or rotational force, such as a doorknob (and the door itself once you swing it open) or, for a very practical application that professional shooters (soldiers, police, whatever) have to take into account is that of the rotation of a bullet, or for example how much force (torque) was applied to the screws holding the gun together, which is a major factor that manufacturers, gunsmiths and enthusiasts take into consideration.

Fair enough. Hadn't even considered that last point, which seems like an oversight in retrospect.

It's also really important for automobiles. It's important for anything that experience rotational force - tall buildings can fail if the wind hitting it causes enough rotation.
