Aw, most of my nostalgia stuff is still nice. A lot of it IS video games (mostly Ocarina of Time and Mario Kart).

I have a hard time with older games now, especially RPGs. And my mom's vision of the 50s is so much whitewashed bullshit.

Are you kidding me? She practically invented it. She's constantly talking about how great the 50s were (she was born in '47) but the vision of the 1950s she gives me is that sanitized Leave It To Beaver nonsense that I know for a fact only barely resembles her own life, let alone the rest of the world in the 1950s. Sure it was a great time to be alive if you were upper middle-class (or above) and white and straight. Everyone else got the shaft -- but don't tell mom that, because she reacts very poorly to cognitive dissonance.

But...that isn't what nostalgia is. I have nostalgia for playing at the creek by my house. Meanwhile, half a state away someone was being beaten because they are black.

Nostalgia is personal. You don't go, "Well, going to the amusement park as a kid WAS fun but I can't be nostalgic for that because in Sudan a civil war was going on. Thousands of people died. It destroyed my nostalgia for amusements parks."

Nostalgia is also about focusing on the good things. No one is nostalgic for the bad things. I don't go, "Man. I really miss the good ol' days when my stepmom would hit and scream at me." I ignore those things because they have NO place when reminiscing about good times.

Sometimes, people don't want to talk about every shitty thing that has happened to them in their life (or the lives of those around them).

That is exactly what I described my mom as doing though -- accentuating the good and ignoring the bad -- or pretending it simply didn't exist.

And I honestly have no use for that kind of self-delusion. I look back on my life in the 90s and I have a lot of good memories, but a lot of bad ones too. I acknowledge the bad ones but am grateful for the good ones.
