Re: Things people are nostalgic about that actually suck

As stated above, my mother's (and that of many other people who lived in that time) idea of the 1950s has no bearing on reality, and that to me is the hallmark of nostalgia. It's a self-delusion that is almost as informed by more recent depictions of that period as it is by that generation's own vague memories, because it's clear they sure as shit don't remember what it was actually like because they were children at the time.

It's the same with, for example, old-school gamers, especially PC gamers. Anyone who claims to be an Ultima fan in 2015 is probably insane (I've seen enough evidence for that conclusion just through watching a couple people on a forum I used to hang out on.)

The amount of people in the run up to the election who said things like their mum and dad had no stuff or no money or worked 80 hour weeks and they didn't remember them complaining back in the 1950s or "during the war" has beggared belief. Usually they have been of an age to be about 11 years old maximum when the 50s ended. They don't remember them, because adults don't tell kids that sort of thing, they barely do it these days, back then? Not a chance.

And what they do remember is from a kid's perspective. I was aware of the shit going on in the world, but my version of it (in my head) was way more innocent than what really happened.

Yeah, I've said some really dumb stuff about my country's history, and then thought, 'That can't be right,' and went back and read more. Yeah, it was hell, sorry I diminished it.

I always like this Roger Ebert quote:

"I grew up in the '50s. It was a lot more like the world of Pleasantville than you might imagine. Yes, my house had a picket fence, and dinner was always on the table at a quarter to six, but things were wrong that I didn't even know the words for."
