Pretty sure it's one of those movies you need to catch right as it came out or in your formative years or you'll just be confused XD kinda like I can't give a ratsass about Star Wars

Eta wait that Christmas movie about the banker who wanted to die - that may be more comparable. I hated that movie

Must be. I watched it when I was like 15 on the "terrible Saturday afternoon movies" channel.

LOL

"That Christmas movie about the banker who wanted to die"--yeah, I think that's a USA thing.

As I understand it, it fell into public domain and got used as cheap Xmas programming by a lot of TV stations for years, and became a sort of tradition that way.

Idk if I'm too disassociated from the context or if it's purely an American thing but when I watched it I hated damn near every aspect and "meaning" behind it. I loath it. Honestly not sure watching it when I was younger would have made much if a difference.

Bit that's what I think of when trying to think of a movie worthy of hate that ppl love XD

Nay

As a American, I personally find It's a Wonderful Life to be pretty boring. I think it's just like other anon said - it gets shown on TV a lot so most people have seen it at some point and it's seen as a tradition, even if you don't actually watch it when it airs each year (A Christmas Story is sort of like that, too).

The part where the angel shows the guy what things would have been like if he'd never been born has been endlessly referenced and parodied, so it's also part of the cultural consciousness that way. I tried to watch it once just to see what the source of the trope was like, but it turns out that's a minor part of the movie towards the end! Most of it is just this guy's life story.
