in physics, when they talk about something falling at a rate of x "per second per second".

I think it has t do with acceleration. So like something is accelerating at 5 m/s/s, five meters/second per second, so every second it increases another 5 m/s. Yes?

Yeah, you've got it.

One second: falling at five meters per second. If it were to keep this speed, it would fall another five meters in the next second.
Two seconds: falling at ten meters per second. Because it sped up, it's fallen a total of fifteen meters (five plus ten.)
Three seconds: falling at fifteen meters per second. It has now fallen thirty meters.

Five meters per second per second is just the rate of change.
