So what makes these particular assholes assholes? Every time someone links to just about any website here, someone else complains about not giving them clicks.

I've mostly seen it for sexists, racists, and other genuinely unpleasant people. Jezebel gets it sometimes too--they're not consistently awful, but they've posted some really unpleasant stuff (e.g. approving of violence against men) and not apologized for it. The Mary Sue can be jarringly sexist as well, but it leans more towards positive discrimination and unintentionally playing into stereotypes. (It's a bit like if a site for Asian-Americans routinely wrote glowing articles about the successes of Asian mathematicians around the world and how all Asians can be like them if they try.)
