Re: I did warn you . . .

I honestly couldn't even be mad at the scene because I saw it coming from 5 million years away.

I mean the show and the book have had plenty of uncomfortable rape scenes before, I understand for a lot of people this is the last straw but for me I just kind of got to the point where I deal with it. I'm not happy about it but I like other parts of the series.

I was actually happy they didn't show much and cut away to Theon. I think if it had been more graphic I would have been unable to stomach it, but not seeing it helps me deal.

I think one of the issues some people have with it is that it cut away to Theon. As in it makes Sansa's rape about his storyline, and not about hers (in which case, it didn't have to be rape, specifically). It's more Sansa suffering to further someone else's plot.

It didn't bother me in the slightest because like you said, you could see it coming, it was still toned down like fuck from the books, and lbr we have no idea yet what the repercussions of that scene will be thanks to the changes they're making to Sansa's storyline anyway. I'm okay with waiting to see how it plays out, but I do get why it bothers people for several reasons.

Well, it may also be because they didn't want to show it (the rape or Sansa being nude). I mean, Sansa had a bathtub scene and there was not a single boob to be seen.

If I'm being honest, the sheer discrepancy between how main cast members (male and female, although it crops up exponentially more often where the women are concerned) are treated re: nudity vs. how the disposable extras are bothers me far more about GoT-the-show than any of the storylines do.

If disposable extras bothers you, you should NOT be watching Game of Thrones.

Sorry, I thought my comment was pretty clear but maybe not.

I have no issue with disposable extras. I have the issue with the fact they're expected to basically stuff a camera up their vag while Emilia Clarke and Iwan Rheon et al. get sheets and strategically placed furniture.

It's the double standards of "big name star, no need to get the tits/dick out!" that bothers me, not the disposable part.

You are aware that pretty much ALL of the naked extras (the prostitutes etc.) have been actual porn actresses though, right? It isn't like they were forcing random newbies in the biz to get nekkid or risk never having a career. They specifically hired people whose entire career REVOLVES around being nude on-camera.

I just want to see some honest dick in this show. Hodor and a naked guy being dragged around as punishment for trying to murder Dany does not count.

to be fair though, we do not see much honest labia ever, either, except for that brief basic instinct thing ros pulled 1st season...

AYRT, Yeah I understand the "making it about Theon" issue but I still felt relieved to be seeing his reaction and not hers in this case. I just don't need to see Sansa be raped graphically or any reaction shot of her in pain.

And I do get why it bothers people, I was more reacting to people being "shocked" about it. I do not enjoy rape in media if I'm honest, I can handle it sometimes and part of the reason Sansa's scene wasn't even that bad to me was because I had time to mentally prepare for it.

But I'm probably going to wait and see how it plays out too.

Oh, very much so. I still hold out some hope that this storyline will do something for both Sansa and Theon's characters, so like I said, while I get their point, character development for either is okay by me, even at the expense of the other (I suppose the argument is that a lot of other people's character development has been at the expense of Sansa's in the show).

Agreed, even if you had no knowledge of the books at all, there was some pretty obvious signposting for that scene if someone understandably wanted to nope the hell away from it. And given how it could have been played out, or how necessary vs. needless you think it was at all, it was done reasonably tastefully.

If they hadn't cut away to Theon I guarantee you that they'd say (like with all on-screen rapes so far) that it was ~exploitative and titillating~

I was actually happy they didn't show much and cut away to Theon.

I'm kind of with you on this. A bunch of other articles talked about how it was terrible because it made the focus on Theon's manpain instead of Sansa, but I saw that shot as a keeping the rape from being explicitly shown?

Don't get me wrong, I still hate the scene in general, but that part I'm not really up in arms about.

AYRT Yeah I mean, I get that point that it should be about Sansa and not Theon but at the same time, I was so RELIEVED for that cut away because it could have been so much worse.

It was still horrible but I don't have to deal with real images burned into my brain forever.

Same. The sounds were bad enough.

At least the way they shot it, I can just pretend that they never even had the actors disrobe or anything. That Iwan and Sophie just sat next to each other and made noises and then got cake together afterwards.

Headcanon accepted.
