It's a difficult question.

In my book the problem isn't that this horrible thing happened to Sansa. The problem is that they stuck with the scene too long. Cutting after Bolton orders Reek to stay, then implying that awful shit went down next episode would have been better. This just seemed all "look how 3dgy" to me. It was pointlessly exploitative, especially when the cut might have made it more horrifying rather than less.

The issue though is that I can't judge a storyline that I haven't seen played out. People are acting like this is completely undermining Sansa's character and turning her into "only a victim" before any of us have seen the next episode. A clip from the next episode appears to show her ordering Theon to do something. While the pacing of this is weird--why the fuck would you have this happen after portraying Sansa starting to take notes from Littlefinger and getting more assertive--I've seen no indication that they've stopped that plot. I can't assume they're going to follow the book and just turn Sansa into that secondary character when they've changed all this stuff.

So I think this decision was stupid, but at the same time I can't jump on the doom and gloom train until I see that it's actually headed toward disaster.

I wish I had more to add than +1. It's the first time I've seen someone else take this approach. It's like you have to be nope-ing out at lightspeed or well-actually-ing out essays on why it wasn't really rape at all.

Personally I hate the implications from critics that Sansa's rape turned her "from developing strong female character to damsel in distress" and "reduced into a victim again"

like

don't you see what you're implying for rape victims here
