So in the books, Ramsay Bolton is a bit more... obsessed with his dogs. I think the show has touched on it, but he names them after the women he has them hunt and kill, he makes Theon/Reek sleep in the kennels (essentially treating him like one of them, etc.

The rape/marriage scene we saw with Sansa and Theon watching still happens in the books. Only, it's Jane Poole instead of Sansa, and instead of just plain rape it's... well... with dogs. Because GRRM wanted to be edgy I guess.

Seriously, the show version was tamer in every way.
