I'm generally pleased with my writing and don't feel insecure about it. This unfortunately seems to be rather uncommon in people my age.

My feelings about other people reading my writing are complicated, but I genuinely love my writing. I'm my own biggest fan. Even when I see the flaws I still really enjoy it. Most other people seem to cringe when looking at their older stuff but I think the first novel I wrote is really adorable and wonderful in its awfulness.

Me too! I'm the same way. I love reading my old writing, and when I see stuff wrong with it, I don't feel horrible ashamed or want to cringe. I just want to fix it. The fact that I can spot it, and see how it could be done better, just indicates to me that I've improved as a writer.

I think maybe people have too high expectations of their writing, and it makes the flaws harder to take.

Yeah I definitely think it helps that I can look at the flaws and see how much I've grown. And I can also notice things that I'm still doing and go "whoops, guess I need to work on that some more" and then be happy to get to work.

Somehow writing was the first area of my life where I managed to drop my perfectionism and not put a lot of pressure on myself. It's changed a bit recently since I went from doing it entirely for my own amusement with no plans to show anyone to wanting to try to publish something, but worrying about how it looks to other people is completely separate from how I feel about it myself. If that makes sense.

If that makes sense.

It makes perfect sense.

Good for you, and I mean that absolutely seriously; it's refreshing.
