I'm sometimes like this and sometimes like ayrt. Sometimes I'm just being mean to myself and going "here, these are people with real problems, try being sad for them for a while instead". If I'm being nice to myself then I prefer happy stuff when I'm in a bad mood.

For some reason this never works on me with fictional characters, but it does with real life stuff. It sounds shitty, but I once got myself out of really deep in the dumps while reading this giant harrowing longread article on the drug violence in Juarez back in 2011 or something. Not in a "whew, I'm glad someone's suffering more than me!" way, but in a "wait, remind me, what was I whining about again?" way.

I can see how it would work better with real tragedy. I think the fictional character route only works for me because I do it with my own stories I make up in my head and I get really into imagining myself into their place.
