Notes:

Remember, longer posts starting next week (although we probably won't get a whole 700 anyway). Going to try the full post first, then split it in half if it takes too long for people (probably a poll on this later). Let's try it first to see if it needs fixing before fixing it, and stuff. Uhhh --

Also, remember that secrets starting next week have to be 600x600 or less! And another option for making your image files smaller in file size for everyone's page-loading convenience has been suggested here.

Thanks to everyone who's responded!

Maybe the comic book stores around here just attracted the wrong kind of people, but lord, you would have to pay me to date anyone I've ever met at a comic book store (even then, it would depend on how much).

I was going to say... :/ What the fuck, some extreme nerd action, ho!

Understandable. I've found three comic book stores with great owners and helpful, welcoming and awesome staff so far, however one comic book store, the store owner looked at me like I was alien (girl and an ethnic minority-most close-minded owners' double-nightmare) and I didn't buy anything, granted I found what I wanted and flipped through other issues in series for other issues. I then went back to the better lit, friendly atmosphere of the other shop further up the street; it's really non-comicbook-reader friendly. During the holidays people/parents would find it welcoming enough for them to go in and look about and the staff helped them. /random shameless plugging

Haven't gone to that store (the sketch one) since though. Never will.

Oh, I'd never go out with anyone met at a bar or a club either, though that might have to do with me having no interest in those scenes. Still, you get some different people in them. A different class of skeezy.

A bookstore? Oh yeah, bookstores, coffee shops, pretentious hipster places, that would be cool. But little comic book stores, particularly the ones in smaller towns, are kind of... :/ But it does depend on the store.

And yeah, girls seem to be way more vulnerable. :( A lot of desperate straight nerds.

OMG YOU'RE NOT A GIRL? *shocked for reals*

[identity profile] lady-ganesh.livejournal.com 2008-01-20 03:34 am (UTC)(link)
Every time it comes up that you're a boy, the whole "cunty" thing comes up again in my mind. And I giggle.

IAWTC

[identity profile] scootermcgaffin.livejournal.com 2008-01-19 11:03 pm (UTC)(link)
Not only that, but (and this may just be my area), but the chances of finding a gay guy there? Very slim.

[identity profile] scootermcgaffin.livejournal.com 2008-01-20 02:43 am (UTC)(link)
I'm in, roughly, the Pittsburgh, PA area. Although actually getting out to Pittsburgh is an all day ordeal for me because I don't have a car and so am forced to take a bus if I ever feel motivated enough to get out that far (which is...pretty rare, really).

[identity profile] lady-ganesh.livejournal.com 2008-01-20 02:14 am (UTC)(link)
I think you're right to a point, but depending on where #43 lives, it could be hard to find people there. Hard-core homophobes can hang out at the comic book store. (They're also the ones looking surprised and shocked when A GIRL walks in, ugh.)

[identity profile] lady-ganesh.livejournal.com 2008-01-20 02:23 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, yeah, and GET OUT AND BREATHE SOME FRESH AIR MAYBE is often good advice too.

43 OP

(Anonymous) 2008-01-20 02:44 am (UTC)(link)
That is a wonderful suggestion, but I'm afraid I live in a very ... rural town. Our one bookstore has very little to do with the gaming community, and our only "gaming" store shut down after only a few months of operation. I was there very often, but the only guys that would show up were around thirteen.

I also should say that I'm not actively looking through yaoi fandom. It just regularly occurs that the "guy" I talk to online happens to be a woman. I must have terrible luck in that area.

Anyway, thank you for letting me respond. I'm sure you have my best interests at heart.

No problem at all! We all make assumptions, whether we like it or not. Sometimes they're right; sometimes not.

It's happened three times. I belonged to some online art communities, and "guys" would PM me saying they liked my writing. Then I'd chat with them and they'd say they had feelings for me. Well, I'd say that was fine, and then I'd ask them for pictures, voice chat, and other things of that sort. They would just shut up until they eventually told me that they were really biologically female. I didn't have a problem with it -- I was very happy they told me the truth -- but it still made me hurt a little inside.

It is a small town, and there are some larger ones nearby. That idea is what I've been trying lately, but there hasn't been too much luck. Thanks for the encouragement, though.

Damn. Seconding the wish for good luck.

Thirding that good luck wish. It really sucks, and I also feel sorry for the girls as well >_
