How does your garden grow, FS?

(Anonymous) 2015-05-22 10:45 pm (UTC)(link)
I know there are a few people who garden on here, so how's it going now that planting season is underway for those of us in the northern hemisphere? I'm growing two new (to me) heirloom tomatoes this year, German Queen and Cherokee Purple. I've had mixed luck with tomatoes in the past but I love big beefsteak tomatoes so I'm being optimistic and hoping for amazing homegrown tomatoes this summer. You?

Kinda okay. Got a real lack of bees around here right now though, so I'm probably not going to get much in the way of apples despite all the apple blossom. My columbines are refusing to flower right now though. They are just kinda leaving my hanging. Same with my cranesbills. We're having some cool weather so things are still hanging back.

I can't start playing around in my new garden until June. Woe is me.

I'm making a list of things I want to plant in it though. I'm pretty excited because I'll be living right in a climate pocket that allows exotics to do quite well, which will be very interesting.

my flowers are doing nicely but I haven't been able to put any vegetables in the ground yet because we've still had frosts. I want my zucchini planted damit!

oh but my strawberries are coming along beautifully. I'm pleasantly surprised at how well they've managed to fend off the rabbits, and now they're exploding.

Only growing flowers this year, but they're doing surprisingly well!

The past few years I haven't had much luck with the window sill germination route, and I suspected it might be because the window was just too cold. So I tried the method of kicking off germination in a warm, dark cupboard for a few days and it seems to have worked.

It doesn't, it tries, but we have a goat.

No. Very big no. She's a pet even when she's a pest, the dogs would be sad, and I have no idea how edible 12 year old goat would be.

Purple cherokees taste fabulous! The farm I work for grows them and I really wish you the best of luck with them.

Thank you! I heard they're really good, which is why I was curious to try them. In terms of heirloom tomatoes, I've only had brandywines, which I loved.

Other ones that are quite so old are Ramapo tomatoes if you can get your hands on them. They are my favorite.

It's mostly overgrown, but we have lilacs, the smell very nice.

I'm trying to grow a melon relative from Guatemala called Cassabanana. They make 50' vines and will apparently go up trees, and the fruit keeps for months and is so strongly sweet scented it's used like air freshener. I also want to grow corn for my chickens, and I'm growing a bunch of different kinds of tomato from seed, and pole beans-- but I'm in SoCal, so I'll probably end up having to let everything die when we're not allowed/can't afford to water anything. I'm worried about keeping my fruit trees and rose bushes alive too. It pisses me off that I can't afford to grow any of my own food when 80% of California's water supply goes to agriculture and 90% of the houses around here still have lush green lawns.

My sympathies, anon. Southern California is a great climate for growing things when there's enough water. :(

I'm not in the Northen Hemisphere, but so far so good! My avocados are growing up nicely but I need to find a plot of land where to put them. My pine tree is drying, though. :C The earth where it was didn't hold the water very well so that might be it. And my chilli plant dried up and died. :CC The good news is that my flowers and other plants are coming out nicely and one even revived!
