Uhhh no. I believe most countries do need a military. the USA certainly does, and as long as it does, it needs soldiers to serve. Being a soldier does not automatically make you an asshole. Believe it or not, some people join because they actually want to help people (and for your information, that's literally what a lot of soldiers do - not bomb people, not shoot people, but go out and help people such as in cases of natural disasters and such). And frankly, I don't even think being forced to make the tough choice of engaging in combat is unjust, if the enemy has weapons and are killing/bombing the shit out of innocent people.

And I say this as someone who is actually very vocal anti-military worship, and very willing to rant about soldiers committing war crimes. I very much support Chelsea Manning in revealing what she did, though it disgusts me that it didn't do any good. Soldiers absolutely need to be held accountable for war crimes, and no civilian death is ever justified. but it's ridiculously fucking stupid to act like every soldier ever is personally murdering children and high-fiving their buddies as they gun down innocent people.

The US military has been fairly upfront about being one giant abuse of power and just a hellhole that only abusers would love for the last 14 years, so I judge the hell out of anyone who joins up.

Right, sounds like the answer is to not have anyone serving in the US military.

Actually, no, that does not sound like the answer.

(Anonymous) 2015-05-22 11:45 pm (UTC)(link)
Actually it is the answer. Anyone with a shred of human decency ought to refuse to serve until they reform and actively work to stop committing war crimes. And also stop the crimes against their own soldiers. When faced with the problem of no soldiers, congress would have to take action. Everyone signing up now and actively serving is by their actions completely on board with being war criminals.

Nope, that is definitely not the answer. Reforming the military needs to be done from above. And you sound like you seriously have no idea what all service people do if you think they can just walk out of the job and go on strike... like, you just so obviously know nothing at all about what all the military does and how it works.

Reforming the military will not happen until the military itself gives politicians a reason to. If wantonly committing war crimes and rapes even of their own fellow service members does not give them that reason, then a critical shortage of man power generated by the soldiers who claim to have a conscience putting it ahead of career might.
