Only that is not entirely true.

To start with, some people currently in the army signed up in peacetime.

Secondly, a significant amount joined out of idealism, not because they wanted to kill.

Thirdly, some people join because it's a shot to get out of poverty for them. The army pays for people's educations, will offer a steady job even for those with no talent for stud, and can be one of the few places where people from certain backgrounds can actually get a proper job.
In fact, the U.S. military specifically recruits at schools and in poor neighbourhoods because they KNOW it's a motivator.

Nope sorry, you sign on for 8 year terms. Everyone now serving either signed on or re-upped after the invasion of Iraq and its associated revelations.

Idealism only works if they did something to try and end the war crimes, basically the only soldier that can claim idealism as a defense is Chelsea Manning.

Poverty is no excuse. If they formed and participated in a campaign group to combat the domestic causes of poverty they'd not only have a better shot at escaping themselves without becoming war criminals, but also helping others escape and reforming some of the more problematic parts of an economic system that depends on institutionalized poverty to exist.

"If they formed and participated in a campaign group to combat the domestic causes of poverty"

What sort of dream world do you live in?

You cannot be a day older than 15.

A LOT of people sign up because it is their only hope of being able to afford a college education. That can be the difference between getting a decent-paying job and being stuck on minimum wage forever.

Doesn't the military specifically aggressively try to recruit in low-income areas for this very reason? I remember reading something like that, anyway.
