I don't think you realize how different America and the typical American lifestyle is compared to those in Japan, Canada and Europe. Most Americans are predominantly sedentary to begin with, then add the fact that many fannish activities require one to be sedentary to engage in them.

This is true. I rarely eat anything other than corn and corn by-products.

(I'm being facetious, but I get you, anon. The food that is affordable and marketed to us is often unhealthily full of corn sugars.)

We must live in very different parts of America, then, because I honestly don't see that many fat people on a day-to-day basis here. Most of the people in my area are normal weight or maybe slightly chubby. Fitness is a big thing in my city - we have a city-wide bike sharing program and the entire city is designed to be as walkable as possible.

Yeah, you live in a very different part of America. :/ I'm going to guess Northeast US.

I live in a fucking red state. No one gives a shit about bike-sharing programs or making cities walkable when there are abortions and government mandated healthcare happening.
