That there are an awful lot of abusive fathers out there.

I think OP thought there was some correlation between abuse and oddness and/or mental health problems of the abused and has now decided that abusive fathers are far more prevalent than that.

Actually it was more of a "maybe there's so many abusive dads in fiction because enough that a lot of content creators that have dealt with them"

Finding out that someone I care a lot about had dealt with this bullshit just made this theory much more plausible.

If that makes sense at all...

I think it's an easy trope and easy to caricature. My parents were more neglectful than abusive, but when writing, I can come up with an exaggeratedly abusive parent easily enough.

I think it's an overused trope partly because it functions as a kind of verbal false limb--if a writer is lazy, the trope will practically write the story for them.
