Uh, I KIND of think the entire MOVIE is the reasoning behind that. He hadn't met Steve yet and wasn't inspired to do any "avenging" in the first Avengers film.

He meets the Cap, helps him with the Shield/Hydra thing, then goes his own way.

Ultron was fucking EVERYWHERE, I think more so than the Hydra thing was. And since he now knew Steve and how the team was needing help to defeat this thing, he joined up. So seeing him at the end possibly joining is, in and of itself, his statement.

Maybe, but then it's worth to wonder where he was during the final battle.

And honestly? That the movie had the "avenging is your thing" line just to
and let the audience assume why he's now an avenger is... not exactly something I would call good writing.

Not gonna disagree with you on that point. I liked the movie, but it was busy and details get missed with a huge, busy film.
