Re: Is 'Call out culture' a good thing or a bad thing?

I agree with the poster who talked about its function as largely absolving the participants doing the "calling out" and granting/strengthening an idea of moral superiority. While I like that people are held accountable for their hateful thoughts and practices, I will also agree that the mob mentality really hurts discourse and discussion. It may also affect the members of the mob who likely have their own prejudices and bigotry or even questions but may be socially literate enough to self censor. In a way, some of the people who are called out are among the living "straw men" variety, where most decent people would be willing to put them on roast without having to explore the nuance of issues. (Aka. A group of white people are able to have someone who is blatantly racist called out and fired, but still ignore their own inherent contributions to racism and are able to stem any guilt that comes from this by mentally labeling themselves as "the good ones" for not being obviously bigoted and taking little more responsibility.
When call out culture becomes even more minute and dissecting (yes, I will also agree with a poster who commented on people being called out for shipping), it can become a game of "wait until someone messes up" because everyone, from you to your "faves" is ultimately going to. It's absolutely true that "the internet never forgets" and will also never forgive, even when there are sincere apologies. I think this also brings about a troubling culture where "ad hominem" is not a logical fallacy anymore, but is celebrated. Do I particularly like Joss Whedon these days? No. But that does not mean that everything he has ever said and done is suddenly evil or wrong. I'll use another cliche that "a broken clock is still right twice a day". People are complex, and while they absolutely deserve to be called out for their crap without the tone policing of those who call out, I feel like the current set up has barriers to actual construction and creates a world where people are permanently defined by their flaws.
