Re: Is 'Call out culture' a good thing or a bad thing?
(Anonymous) 2015-05-23 12:49 am (UTC)(link)When call out culture becomes even more minute and dissecting (yes, I will also agree with a poster who commented on people being called out for shipping), it can become a game of "wait until someone messes up" because everyone, from you to your "faves" is ultimately going to. It's absolutely true that "the internet never forgets" and will also never forgive, even when there are sincere apologies. I think this also brings about a troubling culture where "ad hominem" is not a logical fallacy anymore, but is celebrated. Do I particularly like Joss Whedon these days? No. But that does not mean that everything he has ever said and done is suddenly evil or wrong. I'll use another cliche that "a broken clock is still right twice a day". People are complex, and while they absolutely deserve to be called out for their crap without the tone policing of those who call out, I feel like the current set up has barriers to actual construction and creates a world where people are permanently defined by their flaws.
