There's no chance I'd ever pay for moving boxes when there are perfectly good ones available to re-use. Thank you for your suggestion, but for the same reason I don't buy paper plates, I would never pay for frivolous paper products.

NAYRT but... if you have boxes around to re-use, then surely having boxes for packing isn't a problem.

If you don't have boxes to re-use, I don't think buying boxes for packing is necessarily bad.

Buying cardboard boxes that were manufactured exclusively to be shipped to a store so people could purchase them for moving is an additional percentage of pulp products being used for something that is not a necessary commodity. It is extra trees being cut down for something that they need not be cut down for, because the vast majority of those boxes do not use 100% recycled materials.

As other people have pointed out, there are a lot of places to get used shipping boxes for free. While you might make the argument that those boxes are also originally an unnecessary use of pulp (and I would likely agree) the question is how much of my personal capital contributed to environmental destruction directly, and how much is avoided by finding reusable sources of those resources. There is a significant difference.

That said, 90% of my possessions come pre-owned or are reused. It's a philosophy I believe in fairly strongly, since I care about lessening my personal footprint, and I think the most effective way to do that is with purchasing power. So, while I don't mean to sound sanctimonious, the idea of buying boxes for moving is very much against my personal ideals.

Sorry, that became a blog post.

Fair enough, I guess.

I would say that, to me, the ecological cost seems incredibly marginal, especially in comparison to the cost in terms of time, effort, mental energy, etc of scrounging up an appropriate number of used boxes. But that's probably partly because I completely fucking despise moving as an activity in every possible way, so fair enough.
