Maybe this isn't true where you're hanging out, but from what I've seen, Firefly fans have actually quieted down a lot about Firefly the last couple years.

True, it has gotten better, but it was SO FUCKING OVERWHELMING for so long that it just reflexively pisses me off whenever someone mentions it now.

Does make me feel bad for the incoming fans who might not understand why I'd get pissed about it though...

I'm a Firefly fan, and the amount of ABLOOBLOOBLOO RENOO FIREFLYYYY shit I saw going around in 2009ish was unbelievable and unrealistic.

Nathan Fillion, in particular, had aged noticeably and gained some weight by then, and I hate to say it, but I just can't picture a slightly roly-poly Mal Reynolds running around saving the galaxy.

I think it had to do more with grinding an ax about Fox's shitty handling of the series than any substantive desire to attack the root of the problem, which was... well, shitty handling of a new series.

If the Firefly fans had turned that kind of energy into making sure newer series didn't get Fireflied we might've had a second season for Almost Human -and- a more sensible first season episode order.

Not enough. Although I admit the local branch of the browncoat brigade got pretty damn smacked around during the Star Wars: The Lens Flare Awakens casting threads. They pulled their usual Nathan Fillion and Gina Torres in every role shit that they usually pull with SF projects and really got shut down hard in a way they didn't really expect. They've been pretty demoralized ever since.

That's fascinating but I almost feel sorry for them because it sounds like curbing an overly enthusiastic puppy. Sometimes fans get such tunnel vision because they REALLY REALLY LOVE A THING and they forget not everyone feels the same way.

It is their insistence that it is a lost SF masterpiece that always irks me. Yeah it got a bit poorly treated by Fox, but it was a fairly standard 90s space show made with 90s space show techniques, only made in 2002/3 and featuring middling actors. Whedon was coming off a high, and dissatisfaction with Fox's quickfire technique to messing with and yanking shows had been rising already for a couple of years. Firefly was the happy recipient of a lot of good feeling for Whedon and a lot of anger at Fox which gave it a standing it didn't really deserve. I think the movie proved that it really was just desperately average at best, and it probably would have been better for Browncoats if the movie had never been made. Their allegations of it being a great lost show would have stood up a lot better then, and to be honest, they ought to have taken a level in humility after it flopped and not kept on pushing it.

HAH. Given that it was essentially a rip off of Blake's 7, that's hilarious. Firefly fans are the worst.

While I wouldn't go so far as to say I dislike him I agree that I never thought he was a good writer.
