The fact that female characters back then actually had personalities instead of being Miss Blandess of Inoffensive Blandosity is enough to balance the 40s and the 21st century out for me -- story-wise, if not industry-wise.

I just don't agree.

There were plenty of female characters from old hollywood who were incredibly bland, one note characters. For ever All About Eve there is probably some scifi schlock you have never heard of with a token female character who just wails and then is slapped by a man for being hysterical. Its ALMOST LIKE much like today Old Hollywood had a wide range of films with a wide range of quality.

Boring films where the lead has no personality don't tend to be rewatched by a large audience 60 years later, just like the crap produced now won't be.

Exactly! It's like when people tell me "Media from [other country] is just so much better than the schlock we make here!" and I think "You're only saying that because you haven't seen all their crap, just the stuff people think is worth importing or putting up for torrenting."

I think you're looking at old Hollywood through very rose-colored glasses. The main exception to bland roles back then were very much cut from the same fabric: feisty heroine types. Still a very popular trope now, of course, but equally popular if not more so then.

How many 40s films have you watched?

(Anonymous) 2015-05-23 09:38 pm (UTC)(link)
Because, yes, a lot of the ones that are still somewhat popular do have the roles you're talking about, but there are also a ton where the characters are bland as hell.

Really?

Compare Jean Harlow, who is without a doubt phenomenally beautiful to... Angelina Jolie, Scarlet Johanson, Eva Green, Christina Hendricks?

I think Beauty and Blandness have been around in pretty comparable numbers for a looooooong ass time.
