Really? I think it's a pretty big difference.

Granted that's from my experience. But I find anti-feminists considerably more annoying and infuriating. It means something to have good intent and to try. If you are obsolete and don't think you need to continue to engage, then I'll dismiss you as irrelevant, but I'm not going to think of you as a bigot or asshole on the same level of someone who is loudly and overtly anti-feminist.

Crap feminists do almost as much damage as anti-feminists, because anti-feminists like to use them as ammo. It's doubly true if the crap feminist is a TERF or other variety of radfem.

And outdated feminists are no help either. The likes of Andrea Dworkin or Ti-Grace Atkinson do not inform the shape of modern feminism in any meaningful way, but anti-feminists don't care. They've successfully convinced people that feminism is by definition anti-man.

For what it's worth, I do not count Whedon as a feminist in any way, not even an outdated one. There's nothing genuine about his claims to feminism.

I don't really agree with that. I mean, I agree fully that that phenomenon is happening, but I guess I'd give the lion's share of the responsibility to the people who are lumping everyone together and "using them as ammo". Especially since in this case I'm talking about feminists who are not progressive enough which seems to be the biggest complaint people have about Whedon, rather than people like Andrea Dworkin or TERFs who are actually the ones held up as man-hating harpies.

I personally have no opinions about Whedon's feminism.
