Sofas

(Anonymous) 2015-05-25 11:05 pm (UTC)(link)
I spent all weekend helping my mom buy a new couch. Our criteria was that we can sit with our backs against the couch back and still have our feet flat on the floor. We're not that short but almost all the sofas we tried were way too deep.

And a lot of couches were so deep that even tall people wouldn't have their feet on the floor. Do people really find comfort in that? Is this the new trend? Are we just weird to want to sit comfortably?

That doesn't seem weird. What if you need to escape quickly from a seated position? D:::

I really like a deep couch, personally - mostly I'm mostly either going to curl up on the couch, or try to use a footrest or ottoman or something. My parents hate it like that, though, so I don't think you're weird - just different tastes.

I do sympathize with your predicament though, because shopping for sofas straight-up sucks. It sucks.

I love deep couches.

If a sofa can't make me feel like I'm nine again then it is in no way deep enough.

I had the same problem last year, looking for a couch for a parent with mobility issues that mean getting up and down from seated positions is difficult.

The OT told us that we needed something that kept the knee and hip joints as close to 90 degrees as possible, but there were literally no chairs or couches that met those criteria. Everything seemed made for people with thighs that were three feet long, who like to slouch.

No idea if deep couches are a trend, but I'd want both! At least one sofa like you're looking for for general use without having to deal with a bunch of pillows, and one deep enough to fit both me & my SO lying down for lazy movie-watching.

The SO is a person who likes those kinds of sofas. I am not. I want something a little more supportive (since I'm likely to be on it most of the day if I'm home, with my feet on an ottoman).

This time she's getting her wish though, and we have found a soft, plush, microfiber suede monstrosity that we have both agreed upon. Now hopefully the cat doesn't utterly destroy it.

Squirt bottle and a damp cloth. Bottle to stop any possible clawing, and damp cloth to remove the inevitable drifts of hair (three cats and a dog, me). Or, alternately - get a sofa cover or a king-sized sheet and have your sofa wear that all the time. Easy to toss in the wash, and easy to take off when company is coming over.

Sofa stays clean! (Microfiber is awesome, but, yeah...hair.)

Cat doesn't scratch the furniture, but he does jump with his claws out sometimes, which is why I forbade leather. We do keep a spray bottle around for when he tries to attack shit he shouldn't be attacking like cords.

And I have a vacuum that is pretty good at picking up hair, so I feel like it won't be too much of an issue.

All to the good.
I no longer own a vacuum, yay for hardwood! The damp cloth works a treat. :)

You're not alone in couch preference. But sometimes throw pillows become the only option.

I like really deep sofas where you can lean back and just sink in, but maybe that's just me.

NAYRT
I don't like being thst reclined when Ivm just trying to sit.

Yeah I gave up on getting a couch, because I swear they are all like that. Not to mention cheaply made.

What get's me is even beds are like that now too. I'd expect it from a full or queen, but I recently got a twin for my mom and it was so high she can't get in and out of it.

Oh, I hear you. I have trouble with my back and deep squashy couches are the bane of my existence. A while back I moved to Texas and back and when I got back to Canada (sans most of my furniture) my parents gave me their first living room set as a stopgap until I got settled. Old solid-wood framed sofa (and armchairs) with cushions. Turned out it's EXACTLY what my back needs. I just had it reupholstered and it looks *fine*. And is perfect for my poor back.

So no, not weird. Or at least not unique. I hope you found a good couch--some wood-frame futons are good and solid.

I love deep couches since I tend to draw my feet up onto the couch, but my family complains sitting like that is rude. :(
