Toothpaste can actually be used to relieve burns (the not-very-serious ones). It needs to be applied asap after the burn occurs, and it's just as effective as aloe vera or other fancy creams. It alleviates pain and helps it heal faster. (needs to be paste toothpaste, not the gel stuff).

Putting a drop of bleach in a vase of flowers helps them live longer.

Use rolled-up newspaper inside knee-high boots to help them keep their shape.

Please don't put toothpaste on a burn. The mint might feel deceptively cool on one's skin, but it is NOT a recommended treatment by doctors. It's not sterile for starters, and could lead to infection. It's not a huge risk, but there's so little benefit that you're far better off running the affected area under a gentle stream of cool water, then treating it with an antibiotic ointment.

Huh. It's interesting you say that.
I mean I'm talking about light burns, obviously not anything open - and this is a remedy that the ER doctors and orthopedic surgeons in my family have used for years, not something I just heard from somewhere.

But if somebody doesn't feel safe using it, then better not.
