I was never really clear on what the Harlem Shake was. I didn't watch the videos or anything.

Same, but that's because I purposefully ignore anything related to it. Is it a mass booty shaking? Awkward mob dance? Something appropriating? I will never want to know.

The thing that make it unique is that to make a proper video of it, you have to smash-cut from one person slowly dancing alone in an empty space, to a whole bunch of people wildly dancing crazily all over that same space, without changing the position of the original one person.

Awkard Mob Dance was the closest one you said. It always starts with just one person while others are unresponsive/unaware/not in shot, then in a sudden shift, the meme seems to explode and everybody in the shot (and usually addtional people) start whacky dancing.
