That may be true, but that's just the tip of the iceberg. She's Anne Rice-level nuts.

...and she writes Anne Rice-level PWP vampire fanfic.

And it makes me sad because the beginning of the series was really good!

Eh... I went back and read the early books after so many people told me this. They're okay. She was an early example of the badass chick urban paranormal so her books made an impression on a lot of people, but they weren't anything special. They just seem soooo much better compared to what the series devolved into later.

Anita always had a bunch of Not Like Other Girls going on, but there was definitely neat worldbuilding about the legalities and weird fringe culture of the post-reveal world that I really enjoyed and, yeah, it was fresher then. But I genuinely enjoyed them I'm still sad about what they became. 8C

I'd say Anne Rice is far more pretentious and artsy, while LKH just writes straight up awful porn.

I haven't really followed Laurel K. Hamilton, but I haven't seen her seek and destroy the same way Anne Rice does, nor have I seen her marshal her fans to do her dirty work for her. She seems content to rant about the generic "Negative Reader."
