I* was never really bothered by that, because like you say, he was never inappropriate with her or tried to push her one way or the other. And he met her young self after falling in love with her grown self, if I remember correctly.

To me the real part of this story that's the tragedy is how Clare ultimately just spent her whole life waiting for Henry. And I don't mean that as a negative on the book - I really liked the book! - it was just a tragic love story.
