I've lived in SoCal my whole life, and there's a reason I'm still living with my parents. Unless you're in LA, or close to it, good luck with public transportation, it's never better than okay outside of LA and you will be driving everywhere because everything is spaced apart. And unless you have roommates, good luck affording anything close to the city or outside of poorer areas.

If I were you, I'd look at apartment/housing prices in areas you'd like to live and see if you could make do. You are better off with a car though.
