Thanks for the replies everyone. That's about what I expected, but it's good to have confirmation.

Out of curiosity, is there anywhere on the west coast that would fit these criteria a bit better? I've heard Seattle has fairly good public transportation (and that driving there is awful) but I don't know much about Washington. I'm sure it's expensive too, but I don't know how the cost of living would compare. I'm willing to live elsewhere and save up the money/get used to living in America again until I can find a good opportunity in the areas I want to live. I'd rather not go back to Vegas unless I have to but I'd prefer to stay on the west coast.

A lot can change in a few years so right now I'm just putting out general feelers. But I appreciate all the help!

Seattle is probably in the top three for highest cost of living on the West Coast. San Diego is maybe doable. I live in SD and don't have a car, but I'm insanely lucky in that I can walk to work most days. If I'm working at another location or have errands to run, public transit can eat up a lot of a day, and maybe you don't want to spend a day off running to catch buses. Our trolley system is nice where it runs, but nothing like NY or London (peak frequency is like every 15 minutes), and covers almost nothing of the city and none of the county. Some buses are on 15 minute loops, but some, especially on weekends, run only every hour/hour and a half, or even not at all. There's always noise about expanding the trolley system, but that requires raising taxes, and around here it's probably easier to raise the dead.
